Seoul April 2017: Osulloc Green Tea
Osulloc Green Tea is one of Korea's most famous brands and is from Jeju island. Most people would be familiar with the green tea milk spread and green tea powder that can be bought from several online portals available in Singapore. Osulloc also carries other products such as beauty and body products like masks and lotions, which are also made with the green tea from Jeju.
While in Korea, one must visit the cafe in Osulloc to try the green tea latte, ice cream and roll cake. I first tried to find Osulloc in Myeongdong, only to discover that the shop was under renovation. Subsequently I realised that there are also other branches in Hongdae and Insadong. They just popped up out of nowhere when I wasn't looking for Osulloc specifically. I went to the Insadong branch, where the cafe is situated on the second floor, but place your order at the counter downstairs first.

I ordered the set of green tea latte, roll cake and ice cream, which is around 18000 won. Sorry for the bite from the roll cake as I couldn't wait to eat it and forgot to take a picture before doing so!
The milk and the green tea powder is homogeneously mixed to give a smooth and pleasant taste to the green tea latte. The taste of the green tea is light and not too overpowering. For a stronger taste, I added a bit of the green tea solution (which resembles a koicha, a concentrated, non-aerated version of matcha), which is the dark green liquid in the small beaker, just to have a try. The koicha solution is just green tea powder with water, so try not to add too much if you do not want to have a bitter green tea latte. (Later on, I found that if we whisk a koicha into an usucha, we can get a more mellow, smoother drink with a slightly sweet taste. You can refer to this video by Mei Leaf.)
The chiffon / sponge roll is soft and fluffy, with a hint of green tea flavour. The roll cake is also filled with vanilla cream. The cream is light and not too sweet, and is a good accompaniment to the sponge roll.
And the green tea ice cream. It is super cold and icy, with a strong green tea flavour. In fact, it is so cold that when we pour the green tea solution on it, the solution freezes instantly. The ice cream is not cloyingly sweet and best savoured slowly.
The set is good for sharing between two people, a refreshing afternoon tea set.
